![]() Choreograph Astra 2010!Interested in joining our troupe as a credited choreographer? Please read the breakdown below of the dance styles we're seeking. If interested, please contact us here. Dance Style BreakdownThe waltz motif (whirling and circling) is basic, essential and thematic throughout. Prelude: lead couple early 1800's slow Romantic waltz (very close hold, gazing into one another's eyes, slow rotation, slow circling around the "glade") Act I Sc 1: 4-couple ensemble Polonaise, slow stately Grand March (music to be created) moving into a Quadrille or Sir Roger de Coverley (see this page), ending in a fast Viennese waltz (music to be revised). Act I Sc 2: 3 ballerinas begin a waltz-ballet (compare this video) which is interrupted by arrival of Astra. Instead, the guests begin a 4-couple slow waltz displaying various steps, which is interrupted by (and then abandoned in favor of) lead couple doing a slow Romantic waltz reminiscent of Prelude. Act I Sc 3: 3 ballerinas plus Astra do a short waltz-ballet, from which each ballerina (except Astra) peels off to do a short "character dance" of the period--cachucha, pas de matelot, zapateo, etc.--see these dances Act I Sc 4: Astra does a more spectacular (and longer) character dance--a sword dance such as this one would be excellent. Act I Sc 4a: Lead couple does a victory dance with circling, spinning, leaping steps--a cracovienne from the Bolshoi Ballet's 1956 "Ivan Susanin" to be provided as an example. Act I Sc 5: Astra does a solo waltz-ballet, accelerating her spins and circling, until she catches fire. Tarantella-style would be appropriate. Act I Sc 6: No dances. Act II Sc 1: 4-couple ensemble in gloomy Gothic modern-waltz-ballet, with elements of Apache. Act II Sc 2: 4-couple ensemble in melancholy and sentimental waltz, possible comedic, satirical couple representing an abstract sort of commentary Act II Sc 3: 3 soloist contestants in menacing waltz-ballet, joined by Amalia in mid-dance; each except Amalia peels off to do a solo waltz-timed specialty dance, e.g. burlesque, belly, scarf, modern... Act II Sc 4: Amalia's solo waltz-ballet in a furious mood, kung-fu or flamenco styles appropriate Act II Sc 5: Amalia surpasses Astra in the same music to which Astra failed; e.g. tarantella Act II Sc 6: Amalia seizes Dion in Viennese Waltz, dances with him, puppets him, releases him, invites him 3 times to dance with her into the irrupting fire, on the 3rd invitation he accepts a Romantic waltz into the flames. |
